When you’re a programmer, your laptop is your best friend. It’s where you do all of your work, so it’s important to choose the right one. A gaming laptop might seem like the obvious choice, but is it really the best option for programming? Are gaming laptops good for programming?
Yes, Gaming laptops are good for programming purposes since they are powerful machines that can handle most programming tasks without any lag, and have a high-end dedicated graphics card great for editing videos or working on animation projects.
Gaming Laptops come with a massive amount of RAM that is needed to handle hardware-intensive tasks.

A computer savoy can perform programming with a normal laptop. There are no such laptops that are specially meant for programming.
The above question first came to my mind when I was in my 1st year of a computer science engineering course, and I had to purchase a laptop that could fulfill my programming and gaming needs. Since I was a hosteller, we used to play many LAN games such as CS: GO, Apex legend, NFS(Need For Speed), COD, etc.
In college, we used to learn many programming languages and code on heavy IDE frameworks like Eclipse (for JAVA), Visual Studio (for . NET), a virtual machine for testing, etc. For designing, we used to work on Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver, etc.
I was searching for a laptop that could run my programming frameworks and my game titles without any lag. So, I did a little bit of research and thought of sharing the same in this post.

Java programmers need more RAM than Pythan Programmers.
If you’re working on large projects, or if you have a lot of tabs open in your web browser, you might need even more RAM. Anything less and you will start to experience lag and general slowness when working with large code files or multiple applications open at the same time.
Loading various applications would make the laptop considerably slow if the laptop has a lower RAM capability.
So, if you want to be able to run multiple applications at the same time and have plenty of space for all your code files, I would recommend at least 12GB of RAM. And if you can afford it, 16GB or more is always a good idea.
2. CPU (Central Processing Unit): What Processor do you need for Coding?
The CPU is the main processing unit of a computer system. It is called the “brain” of the computer. It handles and processes every aspect of the functioning of the computer. The more and quicker it processes, the better would be the performance.
In order to answer this question, let’s first take a look at what type of coding you want to do. If you’re a Java programmer, for example, you’ll need more powerful hardware than someone who codes in Python.
For programming, a powerful processor is key. You don’t need the latest and greatest model but make sure your laptop has at least a quad-core processor if not an octa-core one. This will allow you to run multiple processes at the same time without any slowdown.
If you’re working on large projects, or if you have a lot of tabs open in your web browser, you might need an even more powerful processor.
So, I personally recommend you to have at least an Intel i5 processor or higher or its equivalent AMD processor.
3. Display: What screen size do programmers need?
For programming, you’ll need a display with a high resolution so you can see all of your code clearly. A minimum resolution of 1920 x 1080 is recommended. If you’re working on projects that require graphics or videos, then you may want to consider a laptop with a higher resolution than 1080p.
So, what screen size do coders need? The answer to this question depends on what type of coding you do. If you’re writing Python scripts in an IDE like PyCharm, for example, then a larger screen might come in handy because it will allow you to see more lines of code at once without scrolling up and down as much.
I would recommend at least a 13-inch screen for programming.
But if you’re a Java programmer, or if you’re working on a project that doesn’t require as much screen real estate, then a smaller screen size might be just fine.
A larger screen is better for programming. Normally, the programmer has to split the screen during the work in some assignments. In this view, a 14+ inch display is ideal.
However, I would recommend at least a 13-inch screen for programming. But if you want to have more room to work with, or if you’re doing graphics-heavy coding, then I would recommend something bigger like a 15-inch or 17-inch laptop.
4. Storage: Do you need an SSD for programming?
You’ll want plenty of storage space for all of your project files, so go for at least 500GB of hard drive space. SSDs are becoming increasingly popular in laptops due to their fast read/write speeds. However, they are still more expensive than traditional HDDs.
In comparison to SHD (Standard Hard Drive), the SSD (Solid State Drive) is a step ahead. With it, you can improve your performance significantly. If you can afford it, I would recommend opting for a minimum of 256 GB SSD.

So, do you need an SSD for programming? Well, an SSD (solid-state drive) is not necessary for programming. However, it can come in handy if you’re working on projects that require heavy file access. For example, if you’re editing video files or large amounts of data, then an SSD will definitely come in handy.
That said, most programmers don’t need an SSD for their daily tasks, so it’s not necessary unless you’re working on a project that requires one.
However, I personally recommend using an SSD as it reduces the boot time of the Operating System and the load time of other programs.
As a better shoe helps you walk extra, a decent and better keyboard would help you type a lot. Programmers need to be able to type fast, so a laptop with an excellent keyboard can come in handy.
A big keyboard with a separate numeric keypad is always better than one without it. The arrow keys and other functional keys should also be easy to reach.
